Giant Flashlight Media is proud to announce that production is underway on its latest feature documentary, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wing?, directed by award-winning filmmaker Larissa Lam (Far East Deep South). The film will spotlight the life and career of Virginia Wing, an octogenarian Chinese American actress and former Mississippi beauty queen, who has spent over six decades navigating stereotyping, sexism, and ageism in the entertainment industry.
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wing? will delve deep into Virginia’s remarkable journey, from her early days as a young actress facing limited and often stereotypical roles to her ongoing career in contemporary New York theater. Through personal anecdotes, historical context, and expert commentary, the documentary will expose the long-standing biases in stage and screen casting while celebrating Virginia’s resilience, legacy, and contributions to the arts.
“We’re incredibly honored to tell Virginia Wing’s story, which is not only a powerful personal journey but also a reflection of broader challenges faced by Asian American women in entertainment,” said Larissa Lam, director and producer. “Virginia’s perseverance in the face of racial and gender barriers is inspiring, and we believe her story will resonate with audiences worldwide.”
The film will also feature insights from collaborators, historians, and industry experts, shining a light on the historical exclusion of Asian American voices from mainstream entertainment. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wing? seeks to spark conversations about the importance of authentic representation and encourage broader opportunities for older women and people of color in the arts.
Giant Flashlight Media is actively fundraising to complete the film and welcomes support from individuals and organizations who are passionate about amplifying underrepresented voices in media. To learn more about how you can support Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wing?, please visit the partner page.
